Ella Masar Talks to FC Wisconsin Eclipse Players About US WNT and Professional Soccer!
At the last FC Wisconsin Eclipse Program Dinner for the fall, FC Wisconsin Eclipse players had the unique opportunity to talk with current professional and former national team player Ella Masar. Ella played for the U21 US National Team, U23 US National Team, and once for the full US Women’s National Team (to date). As a professional, Ella has played for Paris St.-Germain in Europe, and for the Chicago Red Stars and MagicJack of the WPS. (She is still a player for the Chicago Red Stars as they prepare for the new American women’s professional league hopefully to be announced shortly.)
Ella’s personal journey as a soccer player is a true inspiration for aspiring soccer players. Beginning her college career as a walk-on at the University of Illinois, Ella ended up as the 2006 Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year and an NSCAA Second Team All American. Her first national team appearance then came in 2007 with the U21 National Team (now the U23 team), before she earned her cap with the full women’s national team in 2009 against Germany.
"Every player has their own personal journey," said Christian Lavers. "Ella’s journey is incredibly inspirational because of the obstacles she overcame, and the number of ups and downs she went through. That message is powerful for young, aspiring players to understand as they look at the possibilities of their own future career."
Among the entertaining moments of Ella’s story was her description of her first phone call from Pia Sundhage, the US National Team Coach until resigning after the 2012 Olympics. Believing the phone call to be a hoax, Ella hung up abruptly before getting a return call and realizing one of her dreams was coming true.
"FC Wisconsin Eclipse is a club created to help young players realize their dreams," said Monica White. "Ella’s message really comes down to one thing - with enough personal will, determination, and commitment - incredible things are possible."
Or, in Ella’s words: "Your will can make your dreams a reality."
